On Oct. 19, Philanthropy Roundtable President and CEO Elise Westhoff welcomed members of the Roundtable community to the organization’s Annual Meeting in Palm Beach, Florida. In her welcome address, she highlighted some of the exceptional philanthropists within the community who are improving lives – and discussed the importance of advancing our shared values: liberty, opportunity and personal responsibility.
The Roundtable’s campaign “Our Values Improve Lives” will share examples of how private philanthropy has empowered the charitable sector to strengthen communities and help individuals reach their full, unique potential. In the coming weeks and months, we’ll be sharing stories of charitable efforts – informed and inspired by the values of liberty, opportunity and personal responsibility – that are addressing a variety of social challenges where other efforts, including government-led ones, have underdelivered.

In an op-ed recently published in Philanthropy Daily, “How blockchain can help fund artists—and revive the arts,” Program Director for Philanthropy Roundtable Esther Larson, and COO and co-founder of Living Opera, Christos A. Makridis, wrote that philanthropists have a unique opportunity to fund individual artists directly through pragmatic giving tools like blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens.
Philanthropy Roundtable recently sat down with Heather Templeton Dill, president of the John Templeton Foundation and Philanthropy Roundtable board member. The foundation’s mission is to fund research and catalyze conversations that inspire people with awe and wonder.
Reading through the executive summary of Exponent Philanthropy’s 2023 Foundation Operations and Management Report, I noted those surveyed reported that the top challenge facing their foundations was “the board not considering succession.” Earlier this year a regional leader in philanthropy suggested this was a major concern, and one not limited to family foundations.

United States case and potential consequences for the charitable sector if taxes on unrealized gains are deemed constitutional. The ultimate ruling by the Supreme Court on this matter could lead to dire outcomes for the philanthropic community, with the potential to undermine the transformative work nonprofits do across the nation.
