Philanthropy Roundtable is providing a list of organizations offering assistance to those affected in the region. However, given the immediate need, please be aware the Roundtable has not fully vetted all of these organizations, and we simply list them here for your review and consideration.
Hurricane Milton battered Florida’s western coast near Siesta Key on Wednesday, October 10th as a dangerous Category 3 hurricane with severe flooding and tornadoes. With several confirmed deaths, serious flooding throughout the entire coast, and 3.3 million homes without power, philanthropists are eager to help with response and recovery efforts.
Philanthropy Roundtable is committed to promoting charitable giving to organizations that respond to disasters in a timely and targeted manner while reflecting our shared values about the power of individuals, families, and communities in times of need. While many of these organizations are still assessing the damage, volunteers are on the ground planning for the recovery. If you are looking for ways to give, please consider the following organizations:
Better Together
Better Together works with churches across the country to provide supplies to families impacted by natural disasters and ensure that children are out of harm’s way. Their volunteers host children who need a safe place and provide childcare for families of first responders and essential workers.
Center for Disaster Philanthropy
Center for Disaster Philanthropy has a standing Atlantic Hurricane Relief Fund to respond quickly to the dynamic needs that arise after natural disasters. They also focus on rebuilding homes and livelihoods, offering mental health services, and addressing other challenges identified by communities as they arise during recovery efforts.
Convoy of Hope
Convoy of Hope, a faith-based organization with a focus on combatting hunger, community outreach, and disaster response, is assessing the damage in Florida. They will work with local officials to set up points of distribution to assist storm survivors and those returning to the area after evacuations.
Operation Blessing International
Operation Blessing focuses on immediate assistance and promoting the long-term stability in the areas they serve. They’ve set up a base of operations set up in Valdosta, Georgia to enable their volunteers to respond quickly to the needs of Floridians following the storm.
The Salvation Army is on the ground in Florida with Base Camps throughout the affected areas. They’ll provide mobile feeding units, bunk houses and shower trailers, storage trailers for supplies, a laundry trailer, and a command center to help those affected by the hurricane and partner with local nonprofits to broaden their reach.
Samaritan’s Purse
Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization with a long history of helping those affected by war, poverty, natural disasters, disease and famine. As part of its Hurricane Milton response, the organization is already on the ground assessing the damaging and how the best way is to respond.
We will continue to add to this list as we learn more in the coming days and weeks.
