Philanthropy Roundtable’s Senior Director of Programs Esther Larson recently joined Vice President of DonorsTrust Peter Lipsett for a podcast episode of Giving Ventures, to discuss Roundtable’s Mental Health Playbook created to address America’s mental health crisis.
Larson is joined by Dr. Andrew Hartz, founder and president of the Open Therapy Institute. By recognizing the high demand for therapists who offer non-politically biased treatment, Open Therapy Institute is working to create a more effective mental health system that better serves patient needs. Larson is also joined by Carolyn Gorman, policy analyst at the Manhattan Institute, one of the country’s leading think tanks. Manhattan Institute addresses mental health issues from a policy reform angle aimed at improving mental health systems and increasing accountability in public spending.
The discussion centers around how the organizations highlighted in the playbook address different approaches to our nation’s mental health crisis. They explore prevention, treatment, policy and why funders should consider giving to these causes.
Larson emphasizes the importance of a multifaceted philanthropic strategy that addresses mental health on multiple levels: “The time is now for a disruption in this space and new, innovative approaches to how we can more effectively respond to mental health.”
