Philanthropy Roundtable President and CEO Christie Herrera recently sat down with business innovator, author and philanthropist Hilda Ochoa-Brillembourg for an episode of the Roundtable’s interview series “Doers to Donors,” which highlights how innovators and self-made entrepreneurs are improving lives through charitable giving. Philanthropy Roundtable will release the full interview later this month, but here’s a sneak peek of their conversation, which focused in part on Ochoa-Brillembourg’s deep commitment to the arts, particularly The Orchestra of the Americas Group (OA Group).
“There are great music conservatories, but they only take 100 musicians, 200 musicians,” says Ochoa-Brillembourg, OA Group founder and chairman. “They’re in expensive cities and for a poor, fabulous musician from Venezuela or Patagonia or Africa to get to the Curtis School of Music or Julliard is next to impossible. So we want to create a music conservatory that is very inexpensive and extraordinarily good, and we’ve done that.”
The OA Group has helped train talented musicians from all over the world, many from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds. Through its online music conservatory, it is reinventing music education, “bridging the gap between location and opportunity,” and paving the way for its instrumentalists to go on to successful careers in world-class orchestras.
The OA Group also is offering a first of its kind MBA in Arts Innovation through its Global Arts Institute, guided by a “world-class faculty that includes Nobel laureates, Grammy winners, Polar Prize awardees, TED presenters and an institutional network of dynamic field partners spanning 40-plus nations.
